Chicky grows ever bigger and stronger. Columbine is proving to be an excellent mother and the two of them can be seen ranging far and wide around the paddock and garden. I’ve made a point of picking him/her up on a couple of occasions and it’s quite delightful having this small bird – about the size now of a blackbird – sitting on your hand and accepting the attention. He (for we are reasonably sure it’s a cockrel and headed for the pot) is already the proud possesser of a good pair of fledged wings and a small cocked tail is beginning to appear. There’s very little he won’t have a go at and the other chooks are all solicitous for his welfare. It’s quite a pleasure to see this newest member of the flock taking his place.
At night, Chicky and Columbine are to be found snuggled up in one of the nest boxes. I even found Chalky, the defeated cockrel, snuggled up alongside them one evening. Very sociable chooks, these.
