Saturday night was the night of the fund-raising dinner on board the puffer “VIC 32”, before she is towed off to Fort William this week for refit and removal of her boiler. A new boiler is being built in Devon and she should be back and working again for the 2006 season. For those of a technical bent, the boiler is a 17′ high vertical coal-fired cross-tube boiler.
There were twelve of us for dinner, together with the former owners of the puffer and a couple of the crew. The food was superb, considering it was prepared in a relatively small galley on board, and the company was excellent. After dinner, all sat around the wood-burning stove and Scottish songs were sung.
